Candle Maintenance
Wick Trimming Before Lighting:
-
Our wicks are already trimmed when they arrive to you. It is important that before each light, you trim the wick too! You can use a wick trimmer, nail clipper or even your fingers to give the burnt part of the wick a quick pinch. Trimming your wick will give you a cleaner burn.
First Lighting & Avoiding Tunneling:
-
Your 1st light is one of the most important ones! Allow your candle to burn evenly to avoid what we candlemakers call “Tunneling”. Tunneling forms when your candle is turned off without coming to a full melt pool. This will leave the unburned wax surrounding the candle while the candle burns down unevenly.
Fixing Tunneling:
-
If tunneling does occur, take a piece of aluminum foil (big enough to wrap around the entire candle and tall enough to go about 3 inches taller). Wrap it along the entire candle letting the aluminum go taller by about 3 inches. Leave the foil wrapped around the candle while lit for about 1-2 hours and the candle should burn evenly after. You may now have a low flame since the excess wax is not melted. Easy fix! Take a paper towel, dip it in the melted wax to soak up some of it and you should see the flame grow back to normal.
Candle Safety
Maximum Burning Time:
-
Please do not leave your candles on for more than 3-4 hours at a time. Anything longer than 4 hours may cause the flame to grow bigger which can be a fire hazard. If this does happen, carefully turn the candle off, let the candle dry, trim the wick and start all over. You will see the difference.
Cleaning Soot from Candle Jars:
-
If you have soot on the edges of your candle jars, wipe them down with a wet paper towel! Don’t let it sit on the jar.
General Safety Precautions:
-
Don’t ever leave any candle unattended or within the reach of children, pets or an open window.
